Description

Some great and varied short stories written by The 39 Steps thriller writer, John Buchan. Perhaps best remembered for 'The 39 Steps', John Buchan also wrote several collections of short stories. In this selection, tales about war-time code-breaking (echoing Buchan's own experience as an Intelligence Officer in WW1), cannibalism, and swashbuckling adventure in the days of Bonnie Prince Charlie, vie with subtler, more intimate, stories about the vagaries of human nature, politics, fishing, and poaching in the Lowland Scotland of Buchan's youth.

About the Author

JOHN BUCHAN (1875 - 1940), who served in Intelligence during World War 1, wrote over 100 books including seven collections of short stories. Although he is best known for his five Richard Hannay thrillers including 'The Thirty Nine Steps', some of his most lucid and enjoyable writing can be found in his lesser known short stories. Here tales about war-time code breaking, cannibalism and swashbuckling adventure during the times of Bonnie Prince Charlie vie with subtler stories of a more intimate perspective about the vagaries of human nature, politics, fishing and poaching set against the landscape of the Lowland Scottish countryside where Buchan spent his youth.
